Where things stand at home

Public knee and hip replacement in Ireland is currently a long wait after your consultant recommends surgery — commonly well over a year from referral to operation. [Insert latest published HSE / NTPF outpatient and inpatient waiting-list figures for orthopaedics.]

That's simply the position public orthopaedic services are in — not a reason to panic, but a legitimate reason to look at what paying for surgery abroad, done properly, actually involves: who you contract with, what it costs, and what the recovery is really like.

Questions people ask first

Who do I actually contract with for my surgery?

Aster Medcity, directly. SOS Med Stays manages your accommodation, logistics and recovery support — we are not a party to your treatment contract.

Is this covered by the HSE?

No. Treatment in India is not reimbursed under the HSE Cross-Border Directive. This is a privately-funded pathway.

When can I fly home?

Your treating surgeon decides, based on your own recovery. RCSI guidance suggests 4–6 weeks is typical after joint replacement before a long-haul flight — we don't promise a date.

What does the SOS Med Stays fee cover?

Accommodation, local logistics, recovery support and an optional Ayurveda add-on. It does not cover your treatment, which you pay to Aster Medcity directly.

Can my companion stay with me?

Yes — up to two companions can travel on an e-Medical Attendant visa alongside you.

Can I come just for the Ayurveda programme, without surgery?

Yes, a standalone Ayurveda and wellness stay is available independent of any procedure.
